The need for a better airport

By James Wedgeworth on January 12th, 2010

I recently flew to Aspen, Colorado for a family friend’s wedding.  One of the other guys that flew with us asked if we had noticed the seven Falcon jets at the airport – I did not even realize what they were.

Our traveling companion went on to explain that you cannot land planes like those on Hilton Head Island.  In Aspen, people have expensive homes and they want to be able to get to their homes at a minute’s notice.

I started thinking about how our short runway (the shortest commercial runway in the United States) needs to be lengthened.  It has been a hot political topic, but most every Realtor on Hilton Head feels it would benefit the real estate community to have a more accessible airport.

People who have airplanes want to be able to get to their homes; and at the present time they cannot do that directly – they have to fly into Savannah which makes it a little harder.

We were recently working with someone who was looking at a $7.5 million dollar home and was going to fly his jet to Hilton Head to look at it.  When this particular buyer discovered that he could not fly directly into Hilton Head, he canceled his trip altogether because he did not want to buy a place that he could not directly access.

This would not only benefit the real estate market, but the people who live on the island as well.  In the long run, I think this would benefit everyone in one way or another and would bring more value to Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head Airport Update

By James Wedgeworth on November 16th, 2009

There will be an update on the Hilton Head Island Airport master plan study as part of the Town Council meeting on Tuesday, November 17.  The update is scheduled for 4pm.

At 5pm, there will be a public hearing on a proposed LMO amendment to facilitate the removal of trees on and around the Hilton Head Airport.

This is very important to the Hilton Head Island real estate market and community.

Hilton Head from up high

By James Wedgeworth on April 10th, 2009

As I was flying out of Hilton Head Airport yesterday I noticed the beauty of Hilton Head from up high; the fairways, the beaches, the water.  It really makes me realize what a special place we live in.  The next time you are on a flight look out the window and notice how beautiful Hilton Head is from the air.

We are so fortunate to live in a place that has such natural beauty!

Delta is ready when you are

By James Wedgeworth on March 4th, 2009

We have some good news for Hilton Head Island visitors and residents.  As of this week, Delta is flying back to the island after a 3-month hiatus.

Delta is flying a 34-seat Sab340 Turbo Prop.  The first flight came in at 10:00 Monday.  Round trip flights start at $135 from Hilton Head to Atlanta.  The fare from Savannah to Atlanta is $119 so most people would be willing to pay the extra $16 to be able to have the convenience of flying out of Hilton Head.

Many people I have talked to are excited that they will be able to fly to Atlanta because there are more connecting flights out of Atlanta.  It is my hope that Hilton Head will eventually increase the length of the runway to 5,000 feet.  At the present time we have a 4,300 foot runway and once we enlarge that it will give us the opportunity to have more flights in and out of Hilton Head which is a great convenience for the many people who live on Hilton Head.

At least this is a step in the right direction – a step we are all excited about.
